Wishart – Suburb Profile

Wishart, a residential suburb between Upper Mount Gravatt and the Bulimba Creek, is 12 km south-east of central Brisbane.

Originally known as Mount Gravatt South, in the mid 1960s the emerging suburb was defined by a few streets near the Mount Gravatt South primary school (1964, renamed Wishart) and a few more streets running between the Capalaba Road and Bulimba Creek (Coora to Greenwood Streets).

Wishart was named in 1967 after an early European settler in the area. Parts of the suburb were developed by the Queensland Housing Commission. Upwards of five churches were opened in Wishart, including St Catherine’s Catholic with a Presentation Convent and a primary school (1973). Its new larger church was built in 1983. When the suburb had about two-thirds of its present population the Gateway Motorway was opened on its western edge, more or less completing the suburb’s suite of modern facilities. For some years there had been the Garden City shopping centre (1970) just beyond its south-west corner, secondary schools on its northern boundary (Mansfield High – 1974 and Brisbane Adventist College – 1973) and linear parks along Bulimba Creek. There is also local shopping at Wishart Village in Newnham Road.

Newnham Road in Wishart was originally part of a stock route from farming areas south of Brisbane to the Cannon Hill saleyards. The land beside Newnham Road was eventually developed into small farming blocks, reducing the width of the stock route to that of a normal road, but it was still used occasionally by travelling stock until the 1960s. As Brisbane grew the suburb was subdivided for residential blocks.

The dedicated BCC Busway provides direct access to the CBD making the suburb a more convenient location for city workers to live in.

Excellent public transport and access to schools, shops and entertainment facilities are Wishart’s key attractions.

Educational facilities offered to local residents include the Adventist College (junior and senior), St Catherine’s Catholic Primary, and the Wishart Primary School. Also in the area are those in neighbouring suburbs such as Mt Gravatt High, Mt Gravatt East Primary School, Christian Outreach College and St Agnes Catholic Primary. Residents are also close to Griffith University and Moreton and Mt Gravatt East TAFE Institutions.

Local shops are complemented by major retailers located at Garden City Shopping Centre and Carindale Shopping Centre (approximately 15 minutes).
