Westlake – Suburb Profile

Westlake, a residential suburb, is 14 km south-west of central Brisbane. It is reached by the Centenary Highway (1964) but postdates the ‘centenary suburbs’ of Jindalee and Jamboree Heights. The Westlake Lake is in the north of the suburb near the Brisbane River.

Westlake developed in conjunction with Middle Park and Riverhills, and shares the shoreline of the Pullen reach of the Brisbane River with the latter suburb. The Westlake-Riverhills Bushcare Group (c1992) is a voluntary body for preservation of river front bushland.

Westlake predates the formation of the Bushcare Group by about 20 years, and it was not until the late 1980s that housing reached the river end of the suburb, after starting near the lake.

Schools and churches are found outside Westlake. There is a neighbourhood shopping centre in Westlake Drive and larger centres in Jindalee and Riverhills.

Westlake has a lot of riverside properties and in the early 1990s expanded to include the development Westlake Waters with the ‘natural lakes’.As residential expansion occurred, the 1990s also saw the rise of community efforts to preserve riverfront bushland and encourage environmental protection of remnant natural areas. Groups which formed to forge this greater interest in environmental protection include Save Our Riverfront Bushland (1991), Westlake-Riverhills Bushcare Group (1993) and Centenary & District Environment Action Inc (1996).

The construction of new up-market dwellings and demand for housing in the area is likely to increase the overall price of property in the suburb in the future.

Westlake is a popular suburb for growing families as the area offers a wide range of services and facilities for all family members within close vicinity.

The Centenary suburbs are promoted as a fully planned development with extensive services and facilities including primary and high schools, the recently expanded Centenary regional shopping centre, police and fire stations and many sporting clubs including two golf courses.

As the urban sprawl continues outwards from the CBD, demand for Westlake should remains consistent in future years.
