Wakerley – Suburb Profile

Wakerley, a rural/residential suburb, is 13 km east of central Brisbane. It was named after J.W. Wakerley, an early owner of land near the corner of New Cleveland and Ingleston Roads.Wakerley is bounded by Manly Road and Whites Road in the north, Lota Creek, Rickertt Road and Greencamp Road in the east, and New Cleveland Road in the south and west. Wakerley is named after J W Wakerley, an early land holder in the area.Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for farming, particularly fruit and vegetable growing. The area remained largely rural until the mid 1990s. Rapid growth took place from 1996, with the population increasing five-fold between 1996 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area.

Originally part of Gumdale, Wakerley has a mixture of good loamy soils and less fertile soils around the headwater tributary creeks of Lota Creek. The suburb was named in 1975. Its boundary with Gumdale, New Cleveland Road, was the district’s centre with Gumdale primary school (1935), a progress hall, a general store and Anglican, Catholic and Christian Assembly churches.Wakerley moved slowly from rural to urban. The population movement during 1976-96 was 440 to 715, but it then doubled in five years. Schools and shopping centres are found in neighbouring Tingalpa, Manly West and Gumdale.Major features of the area include Eastside Village Shopping Centre and Bayside Parkland.

Like its neighbouring suburb of Ransome, Wakerley is a sparsely populated suburb, made up of a mix of commercial and residential developments as well as some small farms. Of the residential housing in the area the majority is single unit dwellings (houses) with very few unit/townhouse complexes.

Public transport in the area is difficult. While there are some bus services available personal transport is better due to the spread out nature of the suburb. The Brisbane domestic and international airports, and the Gold and Sunshine coasts are easily accessible via the convenient Gateway Motorway.

Neighbouring bayside suburbs provide facilities such as schools (Wondall Heights Primary School, Manly West Primary School, Manly Primary School, Wynnum High School, Lota Primary School, Moreton Bay College, Wynnum West Primary School) and hospitals (Whites Road Wynnum Hospital) for residents in Wakerley.
