Woolloongabba – Suburb Profile

Woolloongabba is an inner-city suburb with a robust, industrial past. It is 4km south of the Brisbane CBD. Dissected by the Pacific Highway, Woolloongabba is bordered by Kangaroo Point to the north, and sits between the train line to the Gold Coast to the west, and Norman Creek to the east. The suburb also includes one of Brisbane’s premier sporting venues, the spiritual home of AFL in Queensland, The ‘Gabba.

You can map the transport history of Brisbane in Woolloongabba, from the early railway lines that criss-crossed the now-defunct horse-drawn (and later electric) tram lines, to today’s world-class busways linking the Princess Alexandra Hospital to Brisbane’s eastern suburbs. While Woolloongabba is transforming into a bustling residential suburb with some of Brisbane’s edgiest eateries and bars, it is still home to a number of industries, including light manufacturing and engineering, retail, and recently, the creative industries.

Woolloongabba has one of Brisbane’s most multicultural populations, and has a visible immigrant past, with Orthodox churches and various cultural clubhouses dotted throughout the suburb. Parts of Woolloongabba have recently undergone a coordinated program of urban rejuvenation, the outcome of which is a bustling retail strip and restaurant precinct preserving the dynamism and historical significance of Woolloongabba.

Various levels of government have identified Woolloongabba as a site for higher density housing options, including high-rise apartment blocks close to The ‘Gabba within easy access to the Brisbane CBD. Many of the original cottages have been preserved in Woolloongabba, and are being restored to their original condition by Brisbane’s new inner-urban class.

Brisbane CBD is an easy stroll from Woolloongabba, and there is a visible network of bicycle paths connecting the suburb to the city, the Princess Alexandra Hospital, and southern and eastern Brisbane suburbs. The southern entrance to the Clem Jones Tunnel, linking Brisbane’s north and side sides under the Brisbane River, is located in Woollongabba, as is Park Road train station and numerous busway stations linking residents to Brisbane’s vast public transport network.
