Woodend – Suburb Profile

Woodend, originally known as Woodend Pocket, is immediately north-west of central Ipswich. It is bounded by an inverted U of the Bremer River. Woodend is considered to be one of the most prestigious suburbs of Ipswich and is located next to the CBD.

Woodend Pocket was the site of an early Ipswich coal mine, the Radstock (1854) at the western end of today’s Hayne Street. More importantly, Woodend is the site of several heritage precincts, the earliest dating from the 1840s when the Catholic Church obtained a two acre land grant. Later purchases and donations enlarged the site to 20 acres.

Many of Woodend’s properties date from the early 20th century and are set on large blocks of up to two-and-a-quarter acres in size, while the undulating landscape ensures spectacular views across the river.

Ipswich shire as a whole has been the subject of intense interest over recent times given the State Government has allocated large parts of the city to future urban development including improved transport infrastructure.

Originally industries such as mining and railways were the main drivers of growth in Ipswich. However, large employers in Ipswich today include the RAAF Base at Amberley (Australia’s largest operational RAAF facility), the inner-city shopping precinct and a large number of private companies and government bodies.

The central location of Woodend allows for easy access to facilities such as the mall, hospital, trains, private and public schools, parks, as well as the University of Queensland’s Ipswich campus. Woodend itself is home the private school precinct.
