West Ipswich – Suburb Profile

West Ipswich is immediately west of Denmark Hill and central Ipswich, with the Bremer River and the Deebing Creek as its western border.

Originally known as Little Ipswich, the area was one of early urban settlement, being situated between central Ipswich and One Mile Bridge over the Bremer River. The heritage-listed Little Ipswich primary school in Omar Street was opened in 1861. A separate boys’ school was erected in 1882 and remains in use. The settlement has existed since the late 1840s, however, and the Wesleyan Church built a weatherboard chapel on a crown grant at the corner of Limestone and Ellenborough Streets, one block south of the main through road, Brisbane Street. The suburb appears to be light industry at first glance, but there are some fine examples of the shire’s early architecture to be found.

Located next to the CBD, the suburb benefits from its close proximity to the city and its position next-door to the highly sought-after suburb of Denmark Hill. A variety of established dwellings can be found in West Ipswich with late 19th and early 20th century homes prevalent. There are a number of parks in the area with the nearby suburb of Churchill‘s Lobley Park having a fountain, feature garden and imaginative children’s playground. There are a number of primary schools in the area. Many residents find work in the local area but West Ipswich’s proximity to train stations mean commuting to Ipswich and Brisbane is a viable option.
