Underwood – Suburb Profile

Underwood, a residential suburb on the Pacific Motorway, Logan City, is 18 km south-east of central Brisbane. It was named after William Underwood, publican and postmaster, who had a property in Rochedale Road (Rochedale South) between Underwood and Springwood Roads. His son, William, farmed near the corner of Logan and Underwood Roads in the 1930s. The suburb was gazetted in 1975.

The part of Underwood east of Logan originally lay in the Albert Shire and was part of far-flung Rochedale (since renamed Rochedale South). It was farmland in the 1960s, and families had three primary schools for their children, Kuraby, Eight Mile Plains and Rochedale South. The situation remained the same in 2008. By the mid-1970s the area west of Logan Road was subdivided, with a corridor left for the motorway (1986). The motorway has made Underwood’s boundary. The suburb, however, was in two municipalities, Logan (fully developed) and Brisbane (undeveloped) with the dividing municipal boundary along Logan Road. In the mid-1990s the municipal boundary was put along Millers Road, placing all of Underwood in Logan City. The western part, thereupon began to be developed, with a large mail centre and a Big W shopping centre, the latter dating from the 1970s.

Underwood has come a long way since it was merely a rural area dotted with weatherboard and ex-Housing Commission homes. Almost like the little suburb that could, Underwood is now home to some of the Logan Shire’s most impressive, and often most distinctive, properties.

A number of new estates have had an impact on prices in the area with many houses architecturally designed. Development is ongoing in the area as more and more people cotton on to Underwood’s ever-increasing appeal. Older weatherboard homes and brick units can still be found in Underwood but perhaps not for too much longer.

A fairly new suburb, it was gazetted in 1975, Underwood is close to the Pacific and Gateway motorways as well as the Kuraby train station. There are six primary and secondary schools in the area as well as two shopping centres.

Local employment opportunities may be found at nearby commercial and light industrial companies, the Australia Post mail exchange based in Underwood, and businesses located in Springwood.
