 Toowong – Suburb Profile

How much can you pack into one suburb? Well, Toowong has it all. Begin to unpack its many different parts and you will discover Toowong plays a part in almost ever significant or interesting element of Brisbane’s history, and was home to some of Brisbane’s most interesting personalities. Present-day Toowong is a bustling retail and commercial precinct, home to some of Brisbane’s iconic pubs and restaurants, a variety of accommodation options suiting university students through to up-and-coming professionals and more established families, along with riverside parks, quality schools and even a planetarium!

Toowong is 3kms southwest of Brisbane CBD, wedged between the Brisbane River to the east and the base of Mt Coot-tha to the west. Its undulating landscape is teeming with proud, brick riverside apartment buildings; both scruffier and restored Queenslanders and postwar homes; and, increasingly, modern townhouse and apartment buildings fit for aspiring professionals.

Following European settlement of Brisbane in the 1820s, Toowong was originally part of a pastoral lease extending south-west along the Brisbane River towards Moggill and Ipswich. The trainline to Ipswich, and later tramlines, provided convenient transport to Brisbane CBD and helped Toowong establish itself as a bustling commercial sector. These days, Toowong is well-serviced by more efficient and comfortable trains, numerous busses and major arterial roads direct to the Brisbane CBD, namely Milton Road and Coronation Drive. Toowong is also a popular CityCat stop, en route to both the Brisbane CBD and the University of Queensland.

Toowong Village is a multi-storied shopping and commercial centre rising up from the heart of Toowong, and includes major supermarkets and department stores, banks, a public library, and many levels of retail stores.  A mix of trendy, cosmopolitan eateries and drinking holes surrounds Toowong Village. Toowong itself is a satellite business district of Brisbane, home to a wide range of financial, insurance and information technology companies. This mix of retail and commercial enterprises creates a vibrant and bustling community whose facilities service many of Brisbane’s inner-city and western suburbs.

Many people know Toowong as the home of iconic pubs, including the recently refurbished Regatta Hotel and the Royal Exchange Hotel. Toowong is conveniently located en route to the University of Queensland, and is a popular destination for university students, both as a shopping destination during the day and for wilder occasions at night.

Some of Brisbane’s more established private schools, including Brisbane Boy’s College and Stuartholme School, are located in or on the boundary of Toowong, as is the Toowong State School and the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology.
