 Spring Hill – Suburb Profile

The inner-city suburb of Spring Hill is perched on the first of a series of ridges that sprawl north and west from Brisbane’s CBD. Spring Hill is one of Brisbane’s oldest residential neighbourhoods, immediately adjoining the north of the city. Spring Hill embraces its mix of working class cottages along with the loftier estates of its peaks. Spring Hill’s residents share their prime Brisbane real estate with popular (and historical) recreational facilities including the Spring Hill Baths and Victoria Park, and with desirable schools and a vibrant restaurant and bar scene.

Supposedly named after the site of the spring that fed Brisbane’s early potable water supply, Spring Hill’s proximity to the CBD serves it well as both an important medical and residential hub. The elevated position provides sweeping views of the CBD and Brisbane River to the south, and of Mt Coot-tha and the ranges to the west. Spring Hill also borders Queensland’s largest health precinct in the north near the Royal Brisbane Hospital, as well as being home to numerous private hospitals and medical clinics.

While the ridges are now peppered with modern apartment complexes, the lofty thoroughfares of Spring Hill are still home to many of the original terraced hoes built in the late 1800s. As you descend the ridges, you’ll discover charming workers cottages lovingly restored by young professionals and families keen to capitalise on the proximity of Spring Hill to the CBD.

Private schools also adorn the ridges of Spring Hill, including Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Girls Grammar and St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace. Victoria Park Golf Course and popular recreational parklands occupy the sprawling northerly side of Spring Hill, divided by the Inner City Bypass, which also provides a quick route to Brisbane’s northern suburbs and the airport.
