Red Hill – Suburb Profile

This charming inner city suburb is one of Brisbane’s most sought after locations. With its quaint workers cottages and breezy summer cafes clinging to the inclines of the ridge, Red Hill has a distinct ‘Brisbane’ feel, and captures all the best elements of Queensland living.

Red Hill is perched on the ridgeline extending west from Brisbane CBD. The name reflects its lofty position on this ridge, or ‘hill’, and the discovery, supposedly, of red soil when the first residences were built in the late 1800s. Today, Red Hill’s most recongisable landmark, St Brigid’s Catholic Church, remains perched on one of the highest parts of the ridge, commanding an indomitable presence over much of Brisbane’s inner west.

Musgrave Road runs directly from the northern edge of the Brisbane CBD through Red Hill, before it turns into Waterworks Road, and previously this was also a tramline. These days this thoroughfare is lined with beautifully renovated residences and fashionable, quirky retails precincts. One of Brisbane’s most prestigious addresses, Enogerra Terrace, links Red Hill with its better-known and bustling neighbour, Paddington.

Red Hill is a very short walk or drive to the thriving restaurant and bar precincts in Paddington, Rosalie Village, or the creative hub at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village (which includes theatres and the Queensland University of Technology Kelvin Grove campus). It is also close to Suncorp Stadium, Queensland’s premier sporting venue.

Buses connect Red Hill with the Brisbane CBD, and out west to the affluent western suburbs of Ashgrove and The Gap. Red Hill is close to many quality local public and private schools, and is home to the Red Hill Special School and a campus of the Brisbane North Institute of TAFE.
