Paddington – Suburb Profile

Three words come to mind when you think of the inner-city suburb of Paddington: charm, charm and charm. Oh, and friand, as in you won’t find any almond meal muffins in the trendy Paddington cafes, only friands; the subtle differences are important! Paddington is the quintessential Brisbane lifestyle suburb. It has luscious tree-lined streets, popular café strips and alluring street frontages within a triple jump of the city… did I mention how charming Paddington is?

Paddington is two kilometers from Brisbane CBD. Follow the ridges west from the city and Spring Hill, you will arrive in Paddington and Red Hill. Both these suburbs have a distinctive ‘Brisbane’ feel, with beautifully restored workers cottages and Queenslanders, undulating leafy streets and fashionable, relaxed shopping strips. As with many of Brisbane’s inner-city suburbs, there is also a mix of older brick, and newly rendered, apartment blocks. These suburbs typically have a fecund mix of young, urbane professionals, including young families, and less affluent, but certainly wide-eyed, university students and creative entrepreneurs. The result is a dynamic cultural vibrancy you won’t find in more modest suburbs further west or north of Paddington.

Paddington’s new urbane feel is partly a result of recent urban rejuvenation projects in the local area. This includes the redevelopment of Queensland’s premier stadium, Suncorp Stadium (although it will always be Lang Park for some!), just a stone’s throw from Paddington. If you ride the ridge south from Paddington, you will arrive at one of Queensland’s most historically and architecturally important buildings, with rather delightful gardens, Government House (known as ‘Fernberg’). Given Terrace and LaTrobe Terrace are the main thoroughfares through Paddington, and it’s here you can unwind and wile away your weekends, have brunch or browse the eclectic emporiums. Rosalie Village, on the southern base of the ridge, is another vibrant shopping precinct, popular with locals and Brisbane most discerning denizens.

Paddington is serviced by regular buses to the Brisbane CBD and out to the swish western suburbs of Ashgrove and The Gap. There are also plenty of local schools, and the Kelvin Grove campus of the Queensland University of Technology is a short drive or cycle back towards the Brisbane CBD. Many of Brisbane’s parks and recreation facilities, including Mt Coot-tha botanical gardens, are also close by.
