One Mile – Suburb Profile

One Mile is among a diverse group of suburbs in close proximity to the heart of the shire and its name represents the fact that it is one mile from the Central Ipswich Post Office. Its eastern boundary, the Bremer River, is 1.7 km (1 mile) from the centre of Ipswich.

The riverside land was used for cropping in the late nineteenth century and there was a hotel near the One Mile bridge over the Bremer. In 1925 part of the riverside land was reserved for a park, and renamed Leichhardt Park in 1930. At that time One Mile included the suburb now known as Leichhardt, which was named in 1953. The park, however, remains in One Mile, and is the site of the local war memorial. The One Mile bridge at its road approach was built in 1936 and has an unusual rising sun motif. The local primary school (1950) is in Leichhardt, and the Catholic primary school (1967) is in One Mile. There is also a Catholic church and a hall. A Uniting church is nearby. In addition to Leichhardt Park there are three other parks and reserves adjoining the Bremer River, including a large sports ground.

Set on a bend of Bremer River’s upper reaches, One Mile has plenty of wide open spaces. There are many weatherboard, chamferboard and colonial-style homes available. There are a number of primary schools in the area with a Catholic primary school located in One Mile itself. Many residents find work in the local area, given its closeness to Ipswich’s CBD, but One Mile’s reasonable proximity to train stations means commuting to Brisbane is also a very viable option. One Mile is home to a small shopping centre, but being so close to Ipswich’s CBD ensures many residents head to the city for their retail and shopping needs.
