The railway museum in North Ipswich provides locals and visitors an invaluable insight into the area’s railroad past.

North Ipswich lies in a U-shaped bend of the Bremer River, immediately north of Ipswich central. It extends north to beyond the Warrego Highway, which includes part of the former suburb of Raymonds Hill. The boundary between the two lay along W.M. Hughes and Wyndham Streets, just north of the North Ipswich railway workshops.

Located on the northern side of the Bremer River, the long established suburb of North Ipswich offers residents a mix of old and new. There are homes with a distinctly colonial feel in the suburb — one of the first areas settled in the Ipswich area — as well as old Queenslanders and cottages. The new commercial village is rejuvenating the area without overwhelming its long-held sense of history.North Ipswich was home to large railway workshops for many years. Many residents have a connection to the site, which is now a well-regarded museum. There are a number of parks in the area as well as green spaces and sports fields. North Ipswich’s own Browns Park is a well-loved and well-attended family-friendly spot.

Most residents head to the centre of Ipswich for their shopping needs; however, this is changing with the construction of North Ipswich’s commercial village.Residents tend to commute to Brisbane or the Ipswich CBD for employment with a high number of professionals and tradesmen living in the area. There are a large number of primary and secondary schools nearby including St Joseph’s School, Ipswich Grammar School, and Ipswich North State School. The 25-hecture campus of the University of Queensland, Ipswich, is on Salisbury Road, approximately 4km south of North Ipswich.
