If Brisbane had designated cultural precincts, New Farm would be equivalent to one of Paris’ inner-city arrondissements – it’s cultured, it’s trendy, and the locals are well-known for their savoir-faire.  Three kilometers from Brisbane CBD, New Farm occupies almost an entire riverside pocket that runs east from Fortitude Valley, and joins the equally genteel localities of Newstead and Teneriffe to the north.

Originally a farming district (literally ‘new’ farm, after farmlands moved out of South Brisbane), New Farm is now a gentrified, urbane residential metropolis. It’s as if significant parts of Brisbane’s development have been snap-frozen in New Farm, evidenced in the variety of architecture on display. Many of the early Queenslander homes and workers cottages remain, and while some have been impressively restored, others have plenty of potential! Lofty, elegant estates and luxurious apartment buildings adorn the cliffs that sweep east from the northern end of the Story Bridge. Older, but equally notable, brick apartment buildings dominate the lower eastern reaches of New Farm, while quaint gabled houses fill in the gaps.

One of Brisbane’s favourite cultural venues – the Brisbane Powerhouse – is located at eastern-most point of New Farm. Formerly an active power station, the Powerhouse is one of the first examples of the industrial chic entertainment precincts that have been opened in Brisbane’s inner-city suburbs over recent years, where former industrial areas are being converted into capacious theatres, art spaces and fabulous restaurant strips. The Powerhouse is home to two casual waterfront restaurants.

It’s almost impossible to visit New Farm without spending time is one of Brisbane’s most idyllic riverside parks, New Farm Park. This sprawling park is popular with locals and tourists alike, and is a short but calming ferry ride from Brisbane CBD.  Bursting with fulsome rose gardens, New Farm Park is the perfect place to soak up Queensland’s famous sunshine, throw a Frisbee with the kids, or spend countless hours in love’s, often foolish, embrace.
