Moorooka – Suburb Profile

Moorooka is a predominately residential suburb 7kms south of the Brisbane CBD. Moorooka is bordered by Annerely and Tarragindi in the north, the Toohey State Forrest to the east, and the industrial precinct near Salisbury to the south.

Like parts of its northern neighbour Annerley, Moorooka’s verdant streets provide a snapshot of the egalitarian, middle-class Brisbane that has flourished since the end of the Second World War. Neatly, and proudly, kept postwar homes and preserved Queenslanders – identifiable by their simple, one floor plan, wooden construction and elevated position on stumps – line streets that quietly meander amongst the rolling hills of Moorooka, particularly to the north and east of Beaudesert Road.

Moorooka became the name of a train station around 1890 when the train line was extended south from Woolloongabba, Since then, Moorooka has been geographically close the industrial and commercial precincts that drove economic growth and allowed Brisbane to flourish during the 1900s, including the rail yards, the industrial precinct to the south, and the Rocklea markets and trading zone. By the early twentieth century, Moorooka was home to a number of churches that eventually established schools in the region, attracting families. These days, many of these schools and churches remain, and contribute to the egalitarian feel of Moorooka.

The main retail precinct on Beaudesert Road distinguishes Moorooka from its surrounding suburbs – it has a vibrant cosmopolitan and multicultural feel. The Moorooka train station is a short walk from the major supermarket and retail precinct on Beaudesert Road, well serviced by the banks, a post office and a number of smaller specialty stores.

Like many of Brisbane’s inner-southern suburbs, Moorooka is often underestimated and for the keen investor, there are plenty of surprises to be found. Medium-density apartment and townhouse complexes are becoming increasingly common in Moorooka.
