Kangaroo Point – Suburb Profile

Kangaroo Point occupies a gently sloping pocket of land extending north from Woolloongabba towards the Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley and New Farm, separated by the Brisbane River. The sides of the river are connected by one of Brisbane’s most recognisable landmarks, the Story Bridge.

Kangaroo Point is one of Brisbane’s most densely populated suburbs. It is estimated almost 80% of residents live in apartment or townhouse complexes. Strewn amongst the apartment blocks, however, are historical, but often lovingly restored, Queenslander-style houses, some dating back to the late 1800s.

Kangaroo Point contains prime riverside public recreation facilities. The west-facing cliffs of Kangaroo Point are popular with rock-climbers, and the upper and lower public parks are teeming with joggers, walkers and fitness enthusiasts. If you like stairs, there’s 107 of them ascending from the bottom to the top of the cliffs. If you make it, you’ll be rewarded with some of Brisbane’s best views of the city, and west to Mt Coot-tha. You can also grab a coffee or a bite to eat at the cliff-top café. A dedicated bicycle pathway runs along the riverbank, and is particularly popular on the weekends.

Kangaroo Point is linked to the Brisbane CBD by the Story Bridge, and also hosts an entrance to the Clem Jones Tunnel. Cross-river ferries connect Kangaroo Point to the Brisbane CBD, and the swanky suburb of New Farm. Kangaroo Point is also within walking distance to Brisbane’s premier cricket and AFL venue, The ‘Gabba.

There’s a great selection of pubs in Kangaroo Point, including the famed Story Bridge Hotel. Kangaroo Point is also a short walk to the fashionable retail and dining district of Logan Road in Woolloongabba, and a few hundred metres from the Woolloongabba busway station, with frequent services to the Brisbane CBD and Brisbane’s eastern and southern suburbs. Kangaroo Point is also close to Shafston College, a large, independent college.
