Fortitude Valley – Suburb Profile

Fortitude Valley, affectionately known as ‘The Valley’, is Brisbane’s most animated entertainment precinct. Fortitude Valley is home to Brisbane’s China Town, plenty of restaurants from cheap Asian eateries through to Brisbane’s swankiest gastro experiences, and plenty of pubs, clubs and cocktail bars.  Fortitude Valley is also home to some of Brisbane’s most well-known live music venues. Don’t be fooled, though, it isn’t all about the nightlife. But if you’re looking for a place to party in Brisbane, Fortitude Valley is likely to be on your list.

Located 2kms north of Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley is easily accessible by bus, train, or a short, simple stroll, from the city. Fortitude Valley is nestled between Spring Hill and New Farm, and while it may lack the elegance of its loftier neighbours, it has maintained its stance as a bastion of counter-cultural Brisbane in the face of the city’s gradual gentrification. Many of the buildings in the central retail and commercial districts on Ann and Wickham Streets, and the malls that connect them (home to the majority of the pubs, clubs and restaurants) are ostensibly grungy. Fortitude Valley is, however, slowly undergoing urban renewal, as newer apartment developments provide more housing options for those wanting to live close to the CBD, the action of Fortitude Valley, or both!

Walk a few blocks to the north of Brunswick Street mall, Fortitude Valley becomes sophisticated, as the well-to-do creative and professional crowds (some who work in the area) mingle in James Street’s busy cafes, and fashion and home-ware stores. The same can be said as you move towards New Farm down Brunswick Street, where you’ll find emporiums selling ornate and exotic furnishings, and more dining and drinking options.

Remember, Fortitude Valley isn’t all about the nightlife. It’s still home to some of Brisbane’s quaintest workers cottages, fine examples of the Queens lander style of home, and a mix of old and new apartment buildings. Bail some of the long-time local residents up in one of the pubs and you’ll be harangued about their version of life during Queensland’s tumultuous years under then-Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen in the 1970s and 1980s.

But perhaps that’s why it’s called ‘Fortitude’ Valley, because the suburb has a resilience and strength of character you won’t find elsewhere is Brisbane. Whether you believe this or not, The Valley is likely to play a significant role in Brisbane’s future as an important commercial, cultural and residential suburb.
