East Brisbane – Suburb Profile

No surprises here, East Brisbane is a riverside suburb located east of Brisbane CBD, but on the south side of the river. East Brisbane abuts Kangaroo Point to the west, and follows the Brisbane River east until it reaches Norman Creek. It shares a boundary with the affectionately named The ‘Gabba, the eponymous spiritual home of cricket and AFL in Queensland in the neighbouring suburb of Woolloongabba.

East Brisbane is a predominately residential suburb. Like many inner-city suburbs in Brisbane, East Brisbane has preserved some of the original Queenslander-style homes. Some of these have been lovingly restored, while others have made way for apartments and townhouse complexes, which have a history of reasonably strong rental returns in Brisbane.

Apart from the adjoining The ‘Gabba sports precinct, another of East Brisbane’s attractions is Mowbray Park, named after Reverend Thomas Mowbray who built his ‘Riversdale’ manor at the river’s edge. Today the estate no longer exists, instead this site is now known as Mowbray Park, which also serves as a ferry terminal providing quick transport to Brisbane CBD and across the river to the trendy suburb of New Farm.

Like Woollongabba, East Brisbane has a rich transport history. Tramlines once ran up major roads in East Brisbane, including Stanley Street, and on to Bulimba to the east. These days, it’s home to a modern ferry terminal. East Brisbane is also well-serviced by a number of buses, and is a short walk from the Woolloongabba busway station.

One of Brisbane’s better-known schools, the Anglican Church Grammar School (or ‘Churchie’) is located in East Brisbane, as is the historical East Brisbane State School.
