Churchill – Suburb Profile

Churchill, a residential suburb, is three km south-west of central Ipswich. Its western and eastern boundaries are the Bremer River and Deebing Creek, and its main thoroughfare is the Warwick Road from Ipswich. The suburb was named after the county of Churchill (1845).

Churchill is one of the oldest and most historic areas of Ipswich. The elevated suburb is extremely affordable, making it popular with first and second home buyers and investors. The town is relatively small in size, giving it a real close-knit community feel. Churchill State School services local families while a number of other services are found in surrounding areas. Parks and bushland in the suburb attract native animals and birdlife, increasing the rural charm of the locale.

There is a mix of older weatherboard and chamferboard cottages, colonial and post-Federal cottages, 1970s highset brick homes as well as beach-style cottages. Many homes have been renovated and with such a diverse range of designs available, no doubt many more will be rejuvenated in the near future. Churchill is only a small suburb and has a longstanding population that has created a real sense of community. The suburb was once a major truck route, but such heavy traffic was diverted when the Ipswich bypass was built. There are a number of parks in the area with Churchill’s own Lobley Park having a fountain, feature garden and imaginative children’s playground. There are a number of primary schools in the area. Many residents find work in the local area but Churchill’s proximity to train stations mean commuting to Ipswich and Brisbane is a viable option.
