Annerley – Suburb Profile

If you’ve ever been to Surrey, England (just south of London) you can begin to imagine what Annerley would have looked like during the late 1800s, before becoming a fresh inner-city residential suburb of Brisbane. Indeed, the rolling, abundant hills, sloping down towards fertile riverside farming land supposedly reminded Brisbane’s early settlers of Surrey so much, they named a Brisbane suburb after a locality in Surrey – Annerley.

Annerley is located approximately 6kms south of the Brisbane CBD.  Annerley is the next suburb south of Woolloongabba, and is bordered by the train line to the Gold Coast to the west, the Pacific Highway to the east, and extends south to the Yeronga Memorial Park. Ipswich Road and Annerley Road, both significant roads south from the Brisbane CBD, run through Annerley, and meet at Annerley Junction.

You may not find it has the historical depth and gravity of its English namesake (the Magna Carta was signed in Surrey, near Annerley), but Brisbane’s Annerley is not to be underestimated as a desirable or important location; Annerley is brimming with potential.

Annerley is a junction of the working-class, pre-war suburbs that envelope Brisbane to the north and south of the CBD, with the more egalitarian, middle-class suburbs further south. This transition is most noticeable by viewing the change in style of housing in different parts of Annerley.

Annerley sits upon a wide ridge that extends south from Woolloongabba.  The ridge commands impressive views across the suburbs of Yeronga and Fairfield, the Brisbane River and west across St Lucia to Mt Coot-tha. On the western-facing slope you will discover narrow, leafy streets, teeming with quaint Queenslanders and cottages, interspersed with noticeably ragged, fibro postwar houses.

Move further south, and the tree-lined streets exude a more relaxed feel. Here you will find enclaves of similar-looking post-war houses and re-stumped Queenslanders with neatly trimmed gardens. Clifton Hill, at Annerley’s southern border with the next suburb of Moorooka, is a great example of this.

Increasingly, developers are looking to capitalise on Annerley’s proximity to the Brisbane CBD by constructing modern townhouse and apartment complexes. While it is often underestimated, Annerley may soon join the likes of Woolloongabba and Highgate Hill as one of south Brisbane’s favourite lifestyle suburbs.

Annerley is located close to the Pacific Highway, the Eleanor Schonell bus and pedestrian bridge linking the University of Queensland to Dutton Park, the Queensland Tennis Centre at Tennyson, and a selection of private and public schools.

Both Ipswich Road and Annerley Road contain popular local pubs and hotels, and vibrant retail precincts.
