Newstead – Suburb Profile

Nestled on a parcel of land adjacent to New Farm and Teneriffe, Newstead is one of Brisbane’s sought-after riverside suburbs. Newstead is still home to signs of Brisbane’s diverse past, including what is believed to be Brisbane’s longest-standing residence, Newstead House, built during the 1850s. Parts of Newstead, particularly along the riverfront, are rapidly transforming into modern, green urban environments maintaining Newstead’s neat historical village feel.

If you follow the Brisbane River from the Brisbane CBD towards the ocean, on the left-hand side you will first come to New Farm. The river bends back on itself, creating the New Farm pocket, before it bends right and eventually leads to the Pacific Ocean. It’s at this right-hand bend you’ll find Newstead. Newstead commands sweeping views in two directions down the Brisbane River: first back across the river to the vibrant suburbs of Bulimba and Hawthorne and down to New Farm, and left towards the newly developed Hamilton Portside precinct and up to the lofty residences of Hamilton.

Newstead itself is a collection of ritzy riverside apartments buildings (both older and newer styles), and further back from the river, ascending the hill, are grander Queensland-style house and modern mansions. The parks surrounding Newstead House are immaculately kept, and are popular for romantic picnics on the weekend.

Older parts of Newstead off Commerical Road, including old agricultural and industrial warehouses, have been transformed into slick, chic urban apartment complexes very popular with Brisbane’s young creative and professional crowds.

At the northern end of Newstead (bordering the suburb of Albion) is Breakfast Creek, home to the famous, eponymous pub, the Breakfast Creek Hotel. You will also find a restaurant precinct, and a popular local bowls club. The main road leading out towards the airport runs through Newstead, before it turns into Kingsford Smith Drive. If you head inland from the river, important transport infrastructure, including railway stations and railway yards, and the northern entrances to the Inner City Bypass and the Clem Jones Tunnel provide easy access to greater Brisbane.

If you wander through the charming streets towards the river at Teneriffe, you can catch the cross-river ferry to Bulimba and arrive at its bustling restaurant and dining precinct. You can also catch the bus or train a short distance to Brisbane’s nightlife capital, Fortitude Valley, or further into the Brisbane CBD. There is also a popular dedicated bikeway and pedestrian path from Newstead along the riverfront into the CBD.
