Carindale – Suburb Profile

Carindale is a residential suburb of Brisbane, 10 km south-east of the CBD. It is on Cleveland Road and Bulimba Creek, and bounded to the east by the Gateway Motorway.

The Carindale area was originally part of Belmont Shire and the suburb of Belmont. The Carindale housing estate (its name derived from the adjoining suburb of Carina) was placed on the market in 1976, and four years later the suburb was formally named. Its primary schools date from rural times, Belmont State primary school (1876) on Cleveland Road and Carina State primary (1917) in the extreme north-west corner of the suburb.

In 1973 Carindale Nursing Home was opened in Foxglove St, Mt Gravatt East and in 1978 permission was granted to the developers to use Carindale as the name of the new shopping centre. In 1980 the suburb of Carindale was created.

Notable features of the suburb include a large shopping centre – Westfield Carindale, the Pacific Golf Club, Belmont State School, Belmont Bushland Reserve, Belmont Private Hospital (psychiatric only) and Bulimba Creek. The Gateway Motorway borders the suburb.

In addition to Indooroopilly in the west; Chermside on the north-side; and Mount Gravatt on the south side, the suburb has been described as a mini-CBD.

Surrounding suburbs include Belmont, Cannon Hill, Carina, Carina Heights, Mackenzie, Mansfield, Mount Gravatt East and Tingalpa. Public transport runs frequently to and from Carindale and the City via Old Cleveland Road and Creek Road, leading to the South East Busway.

Federally, the people of Carindale are represented by Ross Vasta MP (Liberal National Party) in the seat of Bonner. On a state level, the seat of Chatsworth is held by Steve Minnikin (LNP). Adrian Schrinner (Liberal) is Brisbane City Councillor for Chandler Ward .

Bulimba Creek flows generally south to north through Carindale and is adjoined by extensive open space. About half of this area is occupied by the Pacific Golf Club.

Carindale’s best known location is a super-regional drive-in shopping centre on its western boundary. Opened in 1979 it grew by stages to have two department stores, two discount department stores, two supermarkets, 270 other shops, cinemas, a hotel and a library. It also has a bus interchange and a City Council office. The suburb’s first development phase (1970s-80s) occurred around the shopping centre, westward to Bulimba Creek and to Scrub Road north of the golf course. The new suburb grew rapidly, and upon crossing Scrub Road the new suburb absorbed part of Belmont as far as the Gateway Motorway. About half the area across Scrub Road was undeveloped (2008).

In the 2006 Census, Carindale had an official resident population of 15,135. 29.3% of the suburb were born overseas with New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, England and Hong Kong being the most common. 22% of the suburb also stated that English was their second language with first being Greek (4.0%), Cantonese (2.8%), Italian (2.2%), Mandarin (1.4%), Vietnamese (0.8%). 20 to 39 year olds are the most prevalent age group in Carindale, with 30% of residents in this bracket. The next most common are people aged 40 to 59 (27%), then 5 to 19 (21%), 60+ (16%) and 0 to 4 (7%).
