The big black hole appeared on the corner of Gordon and Roderick streets about lunchtime.

A spokesman for Mayor Paul Pisasale said crews were inspecting the sink hole, believed to be roughly 2 metres in diameter.

“We think one of the storm water drains has collapsed under the street,” he said.

The spokesman said Sunday’s rain might be partly responsible for the hole which has appeared in a particularly old part of the city.

“It is in one of the first areas to be settled in Ipswich.”

The spokesman said the affected street was easily avoided with alternative routes available.

It is not known how long it will take to repair the sink hole.
